Phelan's 4's April Newsletter 2008

This month we will be learning about the rainforests.  They are hot, wet, and green and along the equator in a number of different countries.  They have a huge variety of plants and animals. The rainforest has four layers:  emergent, canopy, understory, and forest floor.  Many of our spices and household items come from the rainforest.  We need to learn about the rainforests so we can help protect them.

LETTERS OF THE WEEK

V, M, N, and W are the letters for April.  We encourage sharing and snacks to follow along with these letters when possible.

FIELD TRIPS

On Wednesday, April 2nd we will go to the Sunnyvale Community Center at 550 E Remington Dr., Sunnyvale.  Directions are posted on our bulletin board.  We need to meet at 10:40 outside in front of the theatre near the fountains.  We will take a group picture at 10:45 and then go inside for the Hansel and Gretel Play.

On Friday, April 18th, we will go to the Youth Science Institute at Vasona Park in Los Gatos.  Vasona Park is located off Blossom Hill Road, between Los Gatos Blvd. and University Ave.  We will meet outside the center at 9:15.  The program begins promptly at 9:30.  Siblings are not invited inside, but you may stay outside on the lawn area or go down to the playground.  After the program (about 10:30) we will go down to the play area.  Please bring your own snack or picnic lunch is you wish.  The cost of the field trip will be announced soon by Mrs. Murphy.  A map and park pass will be in your folder the week of the trip or at www.youthscience.org.

SPRING VACATION

School will be closed April 7 through April 11.  This vacation is the same as the Moreland School District's School Calendar.

OPEN HOUSE

On Thursday, April 24, we will have an Open House from 12:30 to 2 p.m. for prospective families.  Please help us spread the word.  We still have openings for our fall classes.  If you have friends, neighbors or relatives looking for a preschool for fall, please tell them about our school.  We will once again offer parent participation and non-participation spots in both classes.  Please pass the word!

MAINTENANCE SATURDAY WORKDAY

Our third and final workday will be Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to noon in our classroom.  If you have not been to one of the other two workdays, you are required to attend this one.

P.J. Day

On Wednesday, April 30th, we will have a P.J. day.  On that day, children may wear their pajamas, robes, slippers, etc.  Most four year olds think this is great, but there are some who do not like the idea at all.  Please do not make an issue about wearing pajamas if your child opposes the idea at all.  Children who do wear pajamas or a nightgown may stay dressed that way all morning, or you may send extra clothes to change into when we go outside.  Please remember to send a PILLOW with your child that day so the handprint pillowcases may be put on it.  The pillowcases will be complete and sent home on this special day.

SCHEDULES

The work and snack schedules for April, May and June have been put in your folders.  Please check to see when you are scheduled for snack.  At that time, you should provide a healthy snack with at least two items from two different food groups (fruit and yogurt, crackers and cheese, etc.) plus drink (juice or water), napkins, cups, and plates as needed for 26 students.  In our M-W-F class, we ask you to try to tie in the letter of the week with the snack when possible.  If we are celebrating your child's birthday, you may bring party napkins and cups, a special food or sweet (like cupcakes), and a drink.

YEARBOOK

Our new yearbook committee is hard at work gathering pictures and making plans for a great end of the year presentation.  We are asking for a $15-20 donation from each family to help cover the cost of printing, etc.  We would like to have this donation any time between now and Friday, May 16th.  I know you and your child will treasure this preschool keepsake.

If you have any pictures to add to the yearbook, please give Anne Lewis, Mya's mom, a CD or email them to her at anne_c_lewis@yahoo.com

SUMMER SCHOOL

The summer brochure will be out the end of April.  The Kids Korner classes (for children who have been in the 3 and 4 year old preschool classes) will be held in our classroom.  Mrs. Murphy will be teaching.  Watch your folders for the bulletin with the registration information or ask us for more details.
